Strikeforce heavyweight and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist Fabricio Werdum shocked the world on Saturday night by submitting the previous 31-1 Fedor Emelianenko with an armbar at 1:09 of the first round in their main event bout.

Werdum was sent to the mat in the opening seconds of the fight but used his BJJ to work in a few submission attempts on the Russian. He sunk in a triangle choke and transitioned to an arm bar forcing a reluctant Fedor to tap.

After watching UFC 104, I knew there was going to be a boat load of people talking trash on the Machida/Shogun decision. And sure enough fighters around the world were saying that “Shogun was robbed”, “he deserves a rematch”, “the judges are blind”, and “it’s simple math.” I must admit, even after I watched the fight the first time I was thinking that Machida was really lucky getting the decision.

That all changed though when I watched the fight again on mute. I noticed during the fight that Rogan and Goldberg continuously highlighted all of Shugon’s hits and minimized the talk of Machida. I think this was unintentional and completely due to the fact that the commentators were not used to seeing Machida get hit at all. Nevertheless, it was bias. After watching the fight on mute, you can easily see how Machida won the first three rounds.

I understand that I’m not a professional or a judge, so take my opinion for what you will. But if you disagree, watch the fight muted before you call me crazy.

Dana White thought that Shogun won the fight and since he was unhappy with the decision he immediately scheduled a rematch. Somehow that doesn’t seem fair to me. There are a ton of other fighters out there that deserve a chance. Randy Couture was calling out Machida and I think that fight would be amazing. However, on May 1st, 2010, we get to see Machida/Shogun 2. War Machida.

My fourth week, my fifth week, my sixth week… all failures. Why failures after all the progress I’ve been making? I think it all started with my knee being injured. I guess I ran too much one day and my body didn’t like it. I decided to give it some time off. Next thing I know my time off started to snowball – work got in the way with business trips, and then Sara got sick, then me… next thing I know it’s race time. I was no where near prepared for it and decided to bail.

The lesson I learned was to not go too far when you know you’re prone to a particular injury. Stick with what you know and what works for you.

For now, I’m back to the home gym… away from the pavement. Amen.

Some day we’ll meet again, Marathon… some day…

I’m cheering for Abe to go on to big things, even if Rampage Jackson is his coach. Jackson proved to be worth nothing in Abe’s first fight, as Abe was being consistently taken to the ground by opponent Justin Wren. Jackson just kept shouting empty tips like, “do something,” or “move now,” “or he keeps getting you with the same thing.” After which, he promptly lost his cool and walked out on Abe. What a great coach!

Abe is a fellow geek as he graduated Michigan Tech as a Mechanical Engineer. Unfortunately, he lost his first fight. But I’m expecting great things from him in future fights. Keep an eye on this one…

Here is an interview done with Abe where he talked about his harsh upbringing and how he saw through it all to get where he is today:
