July 7th, 2010 Joel Spolsky Comments off

Want to know how to export mail from Gmail? Or delete your Facebook account? Or send giant files via email?

Well, the new Web Applications Stack Exchange is for you. It’s a part of the Stack Exchange network, so it has the clean, elegant design that made Stack Overflow a phenomenal success.

The newest member of the Stack Exchange Network is the first one to go through the community site-creation process called Area 51. There are more great sites in the pipeline, but they have to demonstrate that they can reach critical mass or we won’t create them.

Tips & Tricks: Some of iOS4's Hidden Features

July 7th, 2010 Jacob Lopez Comments off

iOS4 has a ton of features. The most notable ones were shown off when the operating system was introduced, then known as iPhone OS4. Others worked their way to the tech blogs as users discovered more features through the iOS4 development kit. Then there are those hidden features that we are just now hearing about.

Put a Call on Hold Changed Slightly in iPhone 4 - Hold down the mute button until the icon changes. This has changed on the iPhone 4 because of the Facetime icon.

Holdbutton

The Hold Button pre-iPhone 4

Hold Button in iPhone 4 is accessed by holding the Mute icon

Easy package tracking - Click on the tracking number and hold, a prompt comes up asking if you would like to track the package. Obviously more convenient than typing it in or copy/pasting.

More Options for SMS and MMS messages - These are additional options for sending text messages. The first is Group Messaging. If all users have iOS4 with this function turned on, they can share texts, almost as in a chat room. For instance, if one user sends their group of friends a picture from a U2 concert, the others on that list can all see the picture and reply, and see each others’ messages within one text bubble.

The other is one we have discussed before, it counts the characters in a text message. This lets you avoid sending text messages that exceed the size limit of 160 characters.

Messaging options

Sync Notes Over MobileMe or Email Account - When you make notes in the Notes app, you can have them sync over MobileMe or through an email account.

Notesharing

YouTube in Portrait, Zoom - There is almost no reason we can think of to use YouTube in portrait mode, but the option is there. You are now able to do that and zoom in, now you can watch cartoons with a weird aspect ratio and focus soley on the center of the screen. Maybe someone will find a use for this?

Orientation Lock - This is another feature we have discussed before, but we wanted to bring it up again because it is somewhat hidden. You have to open up the multitasking dock to access this function. From there, you will swipe right (this also accesses iPod controls) and you will see a lock. Touch the icon to lock the orientation. Now you can browse iSmashPhone in bed without having the screen rotate every time you turn onto your side.

There are tons of features hidden deep within iOS4. Finding them all is the fun part.

Engineer Update: Day Two

July 6th, 2010 (author unknown) Comments off
Everyone loves remote control toys. But the problem with most of them is, unless you manage to remote control one directly down someone's throat, they're pretty useless as weapons. But what if we were to tell you that we fixed that obvious design flaw?

Engineer Update: Day One

July 5th, 2010 (author unknown) Comments off
Those of you who spent the weekend Tokyo drift-racing your way to a rap battle—or whatever it is people do when they go outside on the weekend—probably feel pretty good about yourselves right now. At the end of the day, though, what do you have to show for it? Vague memories of changing lanes. Twenty-five of the people who wisely chose to stay home and craft items, on the other hand, now have shiny new ultra-rare golden wrenches that they can keep. For a weekend? No. For a lifetime. Eat it, drift-racers. Eat all of it.

Anderson Silva Reminds Us That The Last Person Who Spoke Too Much Didn’t Like The Outcome.

July 4th, 2010 Charttopper Comments off

Anderson-Silva

UFC 116 is gone and done, and it’s time to look ahead to UFC 117: Silva vs. Sonnen which will feature current middleweight champion Anderson Silva defending his title against Chael Sonnen. Sonnen has been hyping the fight by criticizing almost every aspect of Silva’s character, fighting ability and in ring antics, and many are expecting the champion to answer back in the ring. While Silva is not one to trash talk much, he did address Sonnen’s words during a recent interview with Tatame. The champ seems quite cool about the whole situation, though he did send out a less than subtle reminder to Sonnen and fans:

I’m cool… I’m not anxious about his statements, I don’t worry about those things. He is promoting this fight the way he cans. He’s a great athlete, he’s having a chance to fight for the belt, so let’s go. When you get there, everything changes. Inside that cage the speech changes, everything change. The last one who spoke too much didn’t like the outcome, but it’s normal. People have their mouth and their right to say whatever they feel like.

It’ll be interesting to see if Silva pushes the pace after all the negative words he received from media, fans, and even UFC president Dan White concerning the antics he displayed when fighting Demian Maia at UFC 112. UFC 117: Silva vs. Sonnen takes place on August 7, 2010 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.

Here’s the card as it stands:

Middleweight Championship bout: Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen
Welterweight bout: Jon Fitch vs. Thiago Alves
Lightweight bout: Clay Guida vs. Rafael Dos Anjos
Welterweight bout: Matt Hughes vs. Ricardo Almeida
Heavyweight bout: Roy Nelson vs. Junior Dos Santos

Preliminary Card

Light Heavyweight bout: Thiago Silva vs. Tim Boetsch
Welterweight bout: Dustin Hazelett vs. Rick Story
Heavyweight bout: Stefan Struve vs. Christian Morecraft
Welterweight bout: Johny Hendricks vs. Charlie Brenneman
Welterweight bout: Ben Saunders vs. Dennis Hallman
Light Heavyweight bout: Rodney Wallace vs. Stanislav Nedkov

iBooks tip: set your eBook’s language to activate the dictionary

July 2nd, 2010 Thomas Comments off

A huge thanks to commenter Muero for this information. He corrected the mistake I had made in my original sarcastic post about how the dictionary feature of iBooks simply didn’t work in Canada. Apparently, it has nothing to do with how many maple leaves are on your flag, but, rather, what language an eBook is set to. I had to go all the way back into Stanza on my Mac, set the of my eBook to English,  and re-import the file into iBooks via iTunes to get the option to download the iBooks dictionary. After a 20 second download I was good to go and was defining words left and right like nobody’s business (Business: biz-nis -noun; none of yours.)

This is opposed to the process in an app like Stanza, where you can look up a word regardless of the language metatags (tested by throwing the same  no-lanugage eBook into Stanza).

Today Apple have issued a letter to iPhone 4 users where they finally address the infamous iPhone 4 reception issue and acknowledge the problem.  That’s a good step.

But … they are classifying the problem as entirely a software issue, with signal strength being displayed inaccurately.

Dropbox 1.2.3. for iPhone: local document export on iOS 4

July 2nd, 2010 Thomas Comments off

Dropbox can now export files to iPhone apps that support them (wow, vague much, Thomas?). This mean that you can tap on a PDF in Dropbox, bring up the context menu (bottom right), and then export said PDF to Stanza or iBooks (does that clear things up?!). The iPhone is really starting to feel like a smartphone in all of the best senses of the word.
